Hundreds Remain Stranded in Matsu as Military Flights Cancelled Due to Weather

Matsu: Hundreds of people remain stranded on the Matsu Islands after a plan to evacuate them using C-130 military transport aircraft was cancelled. The disruption, caused by Typhoon Danas, left travelers unable to leave the islands as Nangan and Beigan airports were closed due to the severe weather conditions, which included strong winds and heavy rain.

According to Focus Taiwan, the Lienchiang County government had coordinated with the Ministry of National Defense to arrange four C-130 flights to evacuate the stranded visitors. This arrangement followed a request from Kuomintang lawmaker Chen Hsueh-sheng. However, worsening weather conditions led to the cancellation of these flights.

By 2 p.m., seven flights from Nangan to Taipei Songshan Airport and one from Beigan were cancelled. Additionally, a Uni Air flight en route to Nangan Airport had to return to its point of origin due to the inability to land amid the strong winds.

Currently, hundreds of visitors remain at Nangan Airport. Some relief came when the New Taima cruise ship transported 629 passengers from Matsu to Keelung Port in northern Taiwan. Despite this, the Lienchiang County Traffic and Tourism Bureau estimated that around 1,200 visitors were still stranded on Tuesday night.
