Economics Minister Lee Chih-kung (???) said Wednesday that the local integrated circuit business is expected to continue to lead the growth of Taiwan's industrial sector.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of SEMICON Taiwan, a major electronics trade exhibition, Lee said the IC industry plays a critical role in the global semiconductor market and has become the base for Taiwan to further develop its information technology.
Currently, Taiwan is the largest pure-wafer foundry operator and IC packaging and testing services provider in the world and second largest IC designer globally, according to Lee.
He said the local IC industry has laid a strong foundation for Taiwan's industrial development by setting up a comprehensive supply chain, including components and modules for IC production, while the local semiconductor industry has the capability to roll out devices for the booming Internet of Things.
The local semiconductor sector has done a good job of integrating resources from upstream to midstream to downstream segments and those efforts have helped to give the Taiwan IC industry a competitive edge based on low production costs and good quality, Lee said.
With its strong presence in the global market, the local IC industry is expected to develop more applications and create further business opportunities for Taiwan's industrial sector, Lee said.
Addressing in a forum at SEMINCO Taiwan, Mark Liu (???), president and Co-CEO of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC, ???), said the global semiconductor industry will continue to grow based on opportunities in the markets for smartphones, high-efficiency computing, automotive electronics, and the Internet of Things.
Riding the wave of the global semiconductor industry, TSMC is expected to post a nearly 10 percent year-on-year sales increase in 2016, close to the higher end of its estimated of 5-10 percent sales growth, Liu said.
TSMC is the world's largest contract chip maker, holding a market share of more than 50 percent, which means its forecasts for the IC business are followed closely in the global market.
