Taipei-An Indonesian crew member aboard a Taiwanese fishing vessel had to be medically evacuated for emergency treatment after he lost a limb in a tragic accident that took place in Penghu waters Tuesday.
According to the Penghu coast guard, a fast boat was deployed to the scene after it received an emergency call at 3:20 p.m. that three Indonesian crewmen had sustained injuries while operating aboard the Penghu-registered fishing vessel, Te Hsing I No. 2, 14 nautical miles southwest of Penghu's outlying Qimei Island.
Among them, one had lost his right leg and was in critical condition, while the other two suffered only minor bruising.
They were evacuated via the fast boat for emergency treatment to a hospital in Magong at around 5:30 p.m., the coast guard said.
Four other crew members who were with the Indonesians at the time said later that the accident occurred when they were lowering their net into the water and one of them got his leg tangled in the process.
He is currently being treated at the Penghu branch of the Tri-Service General Hospital.
