A delegation of the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (IPAC) will arrive in Taiwan on Tuesday for a four-day visit to strengthen cooperation between Taiwan and Europe, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said Monday.
Reinhard Bütikofer, one of the co-chairs of the IPAC and a member of the European Parliament, will lead a 12-member delegation that includes eight lawmakers on the visit from Nov. 1 to 4, MOFA said in a statement.
The IPAC, which is organizing a delegation to Taiwan for the first time, is an international cross-party group of legislators from 29 countries spanning five continents who are working towards reform on how democratic countries approach China, the ministry said.
While also serving as chair of the European Parliament Delegation for Relations with China, Bütikofer was one of the European parliamentarians sanctioned by China last year over the Xinjiang issue, it said.
During its stay, the group will meet with President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文), Premier Su Tseng-chang (蘇貞昌), Legislative Yuan Speaker You Si-kun (游錫堃) and Foreign Minister Joseph Wu (吳釗燮).
It will also visit the Mainland Affairs Council, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the European Economic and Trade Office, the European Chamber of Commerce Taiwan, and other business associations to promote Taiwan-Europe cooperation on supply chain security and in the economic and high-tech fields.
According to MOFA, the eight visiting lawmakers include Els Van Hoof, who represents Belgium’s Christian Democrats and Flemish party and is also chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee, and Mykola Kniazhytskyi, who heads the European Union-Ukraine Parliamentary Association Committee.
