Taipei, The iPhone XR, a new and relatively affordable model, went on sale in Taiwan on Friday, with the first one being sold to a man at the official Apple Store in the Taipei 101 tower.
The man, surnamed Hou, said he had been waiting outside the Apple Store since 5 a.m. was the first person at the counter when the doors opened at 8 a.m. and he bought blue iPhone XR.
The starting price of the iPhone XR is NT$26,900 and it comes in six colors -- white, black, blue, coral, yellow and red.
Hou, an employee in the local service sector, said he is longtime fan of Apple devices and he had placed a pre-order for the iPhone XR on Oct. 19, when such sales opened.
Since 2008, he said, he has bought eight iPhone models and was looking forward to owning an iPhone XR, with its bigger screen, face recognition function and upgraded processor.
On Friday, the Apple Store was supplying iPhone XRs only to customers like Hou who had placed pre-orders, but the model was available at outlets of Taiwan's five major telecom services providers and at select 3C stores.
According to sources in the local distribution network, however, the iPhone XR supply in Taiwan is limited to 20,000 to 30,000 units in the first week of the sale due to a shortage of critical components for production.
In the next few weeks, the supply of the iPhone X will not meet demand as the number is expected to be capped at around 50,000 units before the component shortage problem is solved, the sources said.
The two other iPhone models released this year -- the iPhone XS Max and the iPhone XS -- went on sale in Taiwan on Sept. 21.
