Tokyo:Students from Toyo University's Department of International Tourism Management organized a Taiwanese tea tasting and seminar at the 2026 Tourism Expo Japan. The event, showcasing teas paired with Japanese confections, was held at the Tokyo Big Sight international exhibition center during the annual three-day expo.
According to Focus Taiwan, the seminar was supported by the Japanese branch of Taiwanese beverage company Happy Lemon, with their representative Lin Tai-yi presenting. The idea for the event stemmed from the students' trip to Taiwan, where they explored local beverage shops and discovered a diverse range of teas. This experience inspired them to compare Taiwanese and Japanese beverage cultures and further their research upon returning to Japan.
For the expo, the students selected Taiwanese teas that they believed would appeal to Japanese tastes, offering pairing suggestions with Japanese sweets. During the seminar, Lin introduced various types of Taiwanese teas, such as green, black, and oolong, emphasizing the unique oxidation and roasting processes of Taiwanese tea leaves.
The tasting featured two oolong teas, jinxuan oolong and Oriental Beauty, served alongside Japanese snacks. The pairings aimed to demonstrate how Taiwanese tea can be enjoyed daily while promoting cultural and tourism exchanges.
