Kaohsiung:A couple in Kaohsiung has been detained on suspicion of fatally abusing their 2-year-old daughter. The decision was made by a Kaohsiung court on Saturday following a request from prosecutors.
According to Focus Taiwan, the Kaohsiung City Fire Department responded to an emergency call at the family's home in the Sanmin District at 828 p.m. on Thursday. Upon arrival, they found the young girl in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. She was later pronounced dead, prompting an investigation by prosecutors.
An examination and autopsy were conducted on Friday to determine if a crime had occurred. In addition to the girl's death, the family's 1-year-old son showed signs of potential abuse, leading prosecutors to investigate further.
On Saturday, the children's parents, identified as Hsiung and Deng, were questioned and found likely to have committed crimes related to causing intentional harm and impeding the development of a child under age 7. Hsiung is also suspected of drug use. The Kaohsiung District Court approved a request to hold both parents in incommunicado detention.
While their 1-year-old son remains hospitalized under observation, the couple's eldest daughter, who is under 7, has been placed in protective care.
