Kaohsiung metro sees record ridership during Chinese New Year holiday

Kaohsiung--The Kaohsiung metro saw total ridership of 365,539 passengers on Monday, the highest number recorded during a Chinese New Year holiday, according to official statistics.

It was also the third highest single day ridership since the Kaohsiung metro service was launched in 2008. The top two days were New Year's Eve 2012 and 2013.

The record came on the same day the Kaohsiung Lantern Festival opened with a fireworks show, which is estimated to have attracted at least 200,000 visitors and accounted for the high passenger numbers on the metro service on Monday, the city government said.

The festival will run through Feb. 12 and include two further fireworks shows.

The city government is providing a yacht service to take visitors offshore from where they can watch the fireworks shows up close, though the service will be limited.

On Monday, more than 100 people took the yacht to watch the fireworks show, the city government's Bureau of Cultural Affairs said.

The two remaining shows will take place on Feb. 4 and Feb. 11, with fireworks being set off from the 1,000-meter breakwater between Cijin and Sizihwan.
