Taipei: The main opposition Kuomintang (KMT) has announced Legislator Wu Tsung-hsien as its candidate for the Yilan County magistrate race, following a closely contested telephone poll. Wu narrowly defeated Yilan County Council Speaker Zhang Sheng-de in the survey conducted from February 25 to February 27.According to Focus Taiwan, the results of the poll were revealed at a news conference held at the KMT's headquarters in Taipei. The event was attended by KMT Vice Chairman and Secretary-General Lee Chien-lung, head of the party's Yilan County chapter Lin Ming-chang, as well as both Wu and Zhang. Despite the competitive nature of the race, the specific figures of the poll remain undisclosed due to a prior agreement between the candidates.Lee Chien-lung acknowledged the close contest, noting that both Wu and Zhang were commendable candidates. He expressed gratitude to Zhang for his graceful conduct and affirmed that Zhang would continue his role as the leader of the county council. Wu, upon his nomination, expressed his intention to incorporate Zhang's policy ideas, emphasizing their partnership in unity.Wu also mentioned plans to meet with Taiwan People's Party (TPP) candidate Chen Wan-hui and TPP Chairman Huang Kuo-chang to discuss future cooperation among opposition parties under the guidance of the KMT. In her response, Chen conveyed through a text message her belief in achieving victory in the Yilan County magistrate race, emphasizing a fair process and her commitment to lead reform efforts.Meanwhile, the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate Lin Kuo-chang, speaking at a separate event, expressed his determination to garner the support of Yilan residents. The DPP had announced Lin's candidacy in an October 22 news release, citing his extensive public service experience and involvement in cultural and volunteer activities within the county government.
