Lai Vows Closer Cooperation with Democracies to Maintain Regional Peace

Taipei: President Lai Ching-te said Sunday that Taiwan will deepen cooperation with democratic partners to strengthen the supply chain and economic resilience, while helping maintain regional peace and stability. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 2026 Rotary International Convention in Taipei, Lai emphasized Taiwan's crucial role in defending against authoritarian expansion and maintaining the status quo across the Taiwan Strait.

According to Focus Taiwan, Lai addressed Rotary members from over 140 countries in an English-language speech, highlighting Taiwan's position as a cornerstone of global supply chain security. He stated that Taiwan will fulfill its responsibility by leveraging its technological strengths to enhance cooperation with democratic partners, aiming to boost supply chain and economic resilience. Lai affirmed that these efforts are intended to uphold regional peace and stability while promoting global prosperity and development.

The convention marks Rotary International's return to Taipei for its annual convention for the first time in 32 years. Lai extended a warm welcome to participants from around the world and expressed gratitude to Taiwan's Rotary members and Rotary International leaders for facilitating the event in Taiwan. He noted that the convention signifies international recognition of Taiwan's long-standing contributions to humanitarian care, public welfare, and world peace.

Lai underscored the shared goal of peace for people globally, especially as countries navigate challenges such as geopolitical changes, extreme weather events, and supply chain restructuring. "At this very moment, peace and stability are the greatest hope of people everywhere," Lai concluded.
