Legislative Yuan Schedules Taiwan-U.S. Tariff Briefing for March 3

Taipei: The Legislative Yuan is set to commence its new session on February 24, with a key focus on Taiwan-U.S. tariff negotiations. A special briefing has been scheduled for March 3 to discuss the results and implications of these negotiations, following cross-party caucus consultations.

According to Focus Taiwan, the agreement entails that Premier Cho Jung-tai will deliver the government’s policy address and administrative report on the afternoon of February 24. This will include a session for lawmakers to pose questions to the Premier. Cho is expected to return on March 3, accompanied by relevant ministers, to present a detailed report on the outcomes of the tariff talks with the United States. The session will also allow for further questioning from the legislators.

The questioning during the March 3 briefing will involve 10 lawmakers from the Kuomintang (KMT) caucus, 10 from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) caucus, and two from the Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) caucus. This arrangement was reached after the TPP advocated for a dedicated report on the negotiations, leading to an agreement among party caucuses to separate the policy address and the tariff briefing.

Additionally, elections for committee conveners for the fifth session are scheduled to take place on March 11. These developments highlight the Legislative Yuan’s focus on addressing the implications of international trade negotiations and ensuring comprehensive legislative oversight.
