Vilnius: The Lithuanian government on Monday committed to addressing challenges related to the suspension of construction at the Teltonika High-Tech Hill Park, aiming to keep its joint semiconductor project with Taiwan on track. Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte instructed government agencies to collaborate with Teltonika to facilitate the project's continuation.According to Focus Taiwan, the halt in construction was announced by Teltonika's main shareholder, Arvydas Paukštys, through a Linkedin post on November 15. He cited a shortage of electricity and unresolved land rezoning issues as the primary causes. The project was initially expected to be completed by 2028, but is now anticipated to be delayed until 2032 at the latest if no further complications arise.Following a meeting with government officials, Lithuania's Economy and Innovation Minister, Aušrine Armonaite, emphasized the necessity of working with 18 different agencies, including the military, to solve the land rezoning problems. She noted that while technical issues had been settled, the government was still in the process of preparing the required documentation to move forward.Paukštys had previously stated that the lack of clarity on technical conditions prevented the design phase for the 55-hectare industrial park, expected to host 10 major facilities. The collaboration with Taiwan's government-sponsored Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) involves a 14-million-euro agreement to enhance semiconductor capacity in Lithuania, with Taiwan providing technology to aid in the production of eight-inch wafers.Designated as a member of the "national chip team," Teltonika is a key supplier of Internet of Things equipment in Lithuania. Paukštys has accused the Lithuanian government of blocking 3.5 billion euros in business investments, which he claims could prevent the creation of 6,000 jobs and lead to significant GDP losses.Despite these setbacks, Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the cooperation in semiconductor develo pment would remain unaffected, underscoring the continued commitment to the partnership.
