Two earthquakes of magnitude 5.2 and 5.0, respectively, struck off the coast of southern Taiwan two minutes apart Monday night, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

The first temblor, measuring 5.2 in magnitude, occurred at 9:47 p.m.

It was centered 113.9 kilometers south of Taitung County Hall, at a depth of 26.2 kilometers, the bureau’s Seismology Center said.

The second quake came at 9:49 p.m., with its epicenter locating 138.3 kilometers south of Taitung County Hall, at a depth of 23 kilometers.

The two earthquakes’ intensity, which gauges the actual effect of an earthquake, was highest in Pingtung County, where it measured 3 on Taiwan’s 7-tier intensity scale, according to CWB data.

An intensity of 2 was also measured in Taitung County, and an intensity of 1 was registered in Kaohsiung and Tainan, the data showed.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
