Magnitude 5.9 earthquake rocks eastern Taiwan

A magnitude 5.9 earthquake jolted Hualien County in eastern Taiwan at 10 p.m. Monday, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

The temblor was centered in waters off Hualien County, 49.4 kilometers east southeast of the county hall, and occurred at a depth of 41.7 km, the CWB's Seismology Center said.

The earthquake's intensity, which gauges its actual effect, was highest in Hualien County, where it measured 4 on Taiwan's 7-tier intensity scale, the CWB said.

The quake also had an intensity of 3 in Yilan County, Nantou County, Taichung, Taitung County and Changhua County, the CWB added.

No immediate damage or injuries from the quake were reported.
