Taipei, A Malaysian man taken from the water of a harbor area on offshore Orchid Island Saturday remained unconscious Sunday, police said.
The 22yearold victim, identified by his surname of Chay, remained in a coma after being taken to the island's health center for emergency treatment at around 2 p.m. Saturday, police said.
He has since been transferred to the Mackay Memorial Hospital in Taitung City for further treatment.
Doctors at the hospital said the patient is now at level 3 on the 3 to 15point Glasgow Coma Scale, with 3 being the worst condition and 15 being that of a normal person.
According to an initial investigation, the victim was playing at the harbor with his friends, but lost consciousness after jumping into the water.
Citing his friends, police said Chay might have hit his head against concrete tetrapods, but the actual cause of the incident required further investigation.
He was on a working vacation at a local inn on Orchid Island, off the coast of Taitung County in southeastern Taiwan, police said.
