Man allegedly murders, dismembers brother over financial dispute

New Taipei police on Tuesday arrested a man surnamed Liang (?) on suspicion of killing and dismembering his younger brother earlier this month over a financial dispute.

According to police, the suspect confessed that he killed his 54-year-old brother on Sept. 1 after being repeatedly asked to lend him money.

“He didn’t pay me back the money,” Liang said as he arrived at the police station having been detained after getting off a bus in the Gongguan area of Taipei at around 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Liang, who lived with his younger brother in an apartment in Yonghe District, New Taipei, is believed to have stabbed his brother to death in his sleep, dismembered him and later dumped his limbs and head into a garbage truck.

Police were informed by a female friend of the deceased on Monday that she had been unable to contact him since Aug. 30, at which point police went to the apartment and found the victim’s dismembered torso and left foot.

The police concluded that the older brother committed the crime after surveillance footage showed him coming and going from the apartment over the past few days with a suitcase. There were also no signs of anyone having forced their way into the residence.

The older brother apparently dumped the victim’s head in a garbage truck on Sept. 1 and other body parts on Sept. 2, the police said, adding that he remained in the apartment after the murder until his brother’s remains were found by police on Monday.

Once police launched a manhunt for him, the older brother traveled around on different city buses to avoid detection.

Liang will be brought to prosecutors on Wednesday on charges of homicide, tampering with and illegally disposing of a dead body, police said.
