Medal Conferred on Outgoing Canadian Representative to Taiwan

Taipei: Canada's representative to Taipei, Jim Nickel, has been presented the Friendship Medal of Diplomacy in recognition of his efforts and contributions to enhancing bilateral relations between Taiwan and Canada. Nickel received the medal from Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung on Monday, just weeks before his departure in early August after assuming office in September 2022.

According to Focus Taiwan, Nickel shared with reporters that two important matters related to Taiwan-Canada partnerships remain unresolved. He expressed hope to finalize one of these negotiations before his departure. The second matter, concerning economic and trade cooperation, is expected to be resolved by the end of the year. However, Nickel did not provide further details on these initiatives.

Nickel announced that his successor will be Marie-Louise Hannan, a senior official at Canada's foreign ministry responsible for South Asia affairs. Hannan, who is familiar with Taiwan from her service between 2002 and 2005, is expected to continue strengthening the bilateral relationship.

After his tenure in Taiwan, Nickel will assume the position of Canada's ambassador to Vietnam. He emphasized the high point in bilateral relations and Canada's eagerness to deepen cooperation with Taiwan in various sectors. Reflecting on his time in Taiwan, Nickel described it as "satisfying," and noted his personal enjoyment in exploring nearly every city and county on the island.

Foreign Minister Lin commended Nickel for facilitating key agreements during his tenure, including the signing of the Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Arrangement (FIPA) and advancing cooperation in technology, health, and strategic dialogue. Lin highlighted Canada's full partnership in the Global Cooperation and Training Framework (GCTF) since August 2024, which enhances cooperation on global challenges by leveraging Taiwan's expertise.
