MeToo Movement Sparks Investigation into Taoyuan Special Education Assistant

Taoyuan: Taoyuan City Government announced on Wednesday the initiation of an investigation into claims of bullying and sexual misconduct by a special education teaching assistant at an elementary school. The assistant, who resigned earlier this month, had been suspended since January, and an external committee is currently reviewing the case.

According to Focus Taiwan, the investigation follows a press conference held by Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) lawmakers and a Taoyuan City councilor, who brought the incident to light. City councilor Huang Chiung-hui, along with legislators Kuo Yu-ching and Lin Yueh-chin, shared allegations of misconduct by the assistant and accused the school principal of retaliating against those who reported the misconduct.

Huang stated that the assistant was accused of inappropriate behavior, including looking at students' underwear in September 2024 and mocking a disabled student in October 2024. However, the school did not report the allegations until January 2025. After Huang exposed the allegations online on February 12, the assistant resigned, yet the principal allegedly retaliated against students, parents, and teachers who spoke up.

In its response, the Taoyuan Department of Education is also investigating the school's delay in reporting the incidents, with assurances of further action should any breaches be confirmed.
