Taipei--Japanese fast-food chain Mos Burger said Tuesday it has stopped selling deep-fried potato wedges, after a consumer in Tainan complained on Monday that he was served potatoes that had turned green.
An-Shin Food Services Co., which operates Mos Burger restaurants in Taiwan, was forced to pull the potato wedges from its menu for the second time in four years, but contended that it followed strict food safety procedures.
The company said in a statement it screens its suppliers based on food sanitation and safety standards set down by the Ministry of Health and Welfare and will continue to comply with the standards to provide products that are safe.
Following the incident, however, Tainan's Public Health Bureau inspected eight Mos Burger restaurants in the city and found a total of 90.68 kilograms of frozen, half-processed potato wedges with green skins at three of the restaurants, the bureau said in a statement.
All of the problematic potato wedges were made on April 30, 2017 and imported from the United States by Flow Tide Enterprises Co., the bureau said.
Green potatoes contain high levels of solanine, a natural toxin that can cause headaches, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, and food vendors that use or sell potatoes with solanine can be fined between NT$30,000 (US$993.5) and NT$3 million based on the Act Governing Food Safety and Sanitation, the bureau said.
Mos Burger in Taiwan has been caught serving green potatoes once before, in September 2013, when a consumer in Taichung complained about feeling nauseous after having a bite of a potato wedge that was later discovered to have turned green.
Mos Burger removed the product from its menu in the wake of that incident and only put it back recently.
