MRT worker dies after construction accident in Taipei

A worker in his 60s died following an accident at an MRT station under construction in Wanhua District Tuesday afternoon, Taipei’s Department of Rapid Transit Systems (DORTS) confirmed later the same day.

Shortly after being notified at about 4 p.m., police officers and fire bureau personnel arrived at the Jiala Station construction site, which is part of the planned Wanda-Shulin metro line being built under Wanda Road, according to the department.

The worker suffered a head injury during the accident and lost consciousness before being taken to National Taiwan University Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries at around 6:50 p.m., DORTS official Liu Chen-chung (???) said.

An initial investigation indicates that the worker was trying to disassemble a tunnel boring machine following an excavation operation with four to five coworkers at the time of the accident, Liu said.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation and construction at the site has been suspended by the city’s Department of Labor until further notice, Liu added.

The city government will work with the construction company to help the worker’s family with insurance claims and other matters, the department said.

The Wanda-Shulin Line is a planned metro line that includes 22 stations across Taipei and New Taipei cities.

The first phase of the construction, which includes nine stations from Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall Station to the planned Juguang Station in Banqiao District, is scheduled to be completed at the end of 2025.
