Music Festival Fined Over Noise Regulation Breaches

Taipei: Taipei's Department of Environmental Protection fined the organizer of the 2025 S2O Songkran Music Festival NT$45,000 (US$1,537) on Tuesday after receiving 55 noise complaints from residents related to the festival. The event took place at Dajia Riverside Park in Taipei on Saturday and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. each day, with 17 complaints filed on Saturday and 38 on Sunday.

According to Focus Taiwan, immediately after receiving the complaints, officials were dispatched to the festival site, where they confirmed that the noise levels exceeded the permissible limits set by the Noise Control Act. A resident surnamed Hsieh reported hearing "a rhythmic, low frequency noise" from the festival in his home near Dahu Park in Neihu District, nearly 10 kilometers away. Some elderly residents reportedly experienced discomfort or palpitations due to the noise.

In light of the incident, officials from the Taipei City Hydraulic Engineering Office stated they would review the complaints and work on improvements. Taipei City Councilor Ho Meng-hua of the Democratic Progressive Party emphasized the need for solutions to the noise issues associated with large musical events, suggesting collaboration with experts to mitigate effects like reverberations, vibrations, and echoes. She also proposed the implementation of regulations to prevent future occurrences.
