NDC Chief Predicts Positive Economic Growth for Taiwan Following U.S. Election.

Taipei: National Development Council (NDC) chief Liu Chin-ching expressed optimism about Taiwan's economic prospects, projecting a growth of over 3 percent in the coming year following the election of Donald Trump as U.S. president. Liu shared these insights while addressing lawmakers at a legislative hearing on Thursday.According to Focus Taiwan, Liu highlighted that Trump's campaign promises, particularly the imposition of a 60 percent tariff on Chinese products, could benefit Taiwan by redirecting orders to its industries. He identified the election of Trump as a significant factor that could bring more advantages than disadvantages to Taiwan's economy.Liu also noted the potential influx of "China Hawks" in Trump's administration, which he believes could lead to a ban on technology transfers to China. This scenario, Liu argued, would enhance U.S.-Taiwan technological collaboration. However, he acknowledged the potential challenge of a 10 percent tariff on Taiwan's exports to the U.S. under Trump's lead ership.During the hearing, Liu addressed concerns raised by Kuomintang Legislator Yang Chiung-ying regarding human resources in the semiconductor industry. Liu stated that Taiwan's talent pool, comprising approximately 6,000 college graduates annually, is sufficient. Nonetheless, he recognized the potential for a squeeze effect on other industries and pledged to discuss the issue with other relevant agencies.Additionally, Liu announced plans to relax the Act for Recruitment and Employment to attract more foreign mid-level skilled workers to Taiwan, such as experienced welders. He indicated that draft amendments, including a clear definition of mid-level workers, would be made public by mid-December after discussions with the Ministry of Labor.
