Taipei: Taiwan-based IC designer MediaTek Inc. announced Monday that U.S. AI chip giant Nvidia Corp. has invested a significant US$3.5 billion in its record US$3.9 billion overseas convertible bond offering. The bond offering marks the largest ever by a Taiwanese company, with participation from Nvidia, Google's parent company Alphabet, and several international institutional investors.
According to Focus Taiwan, the expanded partnership between MediaTek and Nvidia will see MediaTek adopt Nvidia's NVLink Fusion platform. This strategic move will enable cloud service providers and AI developers to build custom AI chips that connect directly to Nvidia's AI computing systems. The collaboration aims to leverage Nvidia's expertise in accelerated computing, AI software, and graphics, alongside MediaTek's strengths in custom chip design, high-performance and energy-efficient system-on-chip (SoC) development, advanced chip packaging, and networking technologies.
MediaTek outlined the partnership's focus on three key areas: AI infrastructure, edge AI, and AI-enabled platforms for software-defined vehicles. In the realm of AI infrastructure, MediaTek will assist customers in developing custom AI chips and computing systems that integrate seamlessly with Nvidia's rack-scale AI platform.
In the domain of edge AI, the companies plan to continue advancing future generations of RTX Spark and DGX Spark chips. This involves combining MediaTek-designed SoCs with Nvidia GPUs for use in AI-enabled personal computers, AI developer systems, and enterprise workstations.
