OLYMPICS/Taiwan will be represented at Winter Olympics closing ceremony: official

Taiwan will have a presence at the closing ceremony of the Beijing Winter Olympics on Sunday, the Sports Administration announced Friday, after it said last week that all Taiwanese athletes may have left the city by then.

Last week, the Sports Administration had said that as Feb. 18 would be the last day of competitive events for the Taiwan team, it was unlikely that the four athletes would still be in Beijing for the Sunday’s closing ceremony.

It is customary for the athletes to leave the Olympic host country within two days of the last event, the Sports Administration noted at the time, adding that a decision on the Taiwan team’s attendance at the closing ceremony would be made by Friday.

While the Sports Administration said Friday that Taiwan will have a presence at the closing ceremony, it did not disclose which of the four athletes on the team will attend.

According to media reports, Lin Sin-rong (???), who took part in the luge women’s singles, has already returned to Taiwan and is currently in mandatory quarantine.

Speed skater Huang Yu-ting (???) will be leaving for the United States on Saturday and will not be present at the closing ceremony, her father Huang Chin-lung (???) said in a recent interview.

Huang was one of the flag bearers at the opening ceremony, along with skier Ho Ping-jui (???), who is also unlikely to attend the closing ceremony, after he suffered an injury during the men’s slalom run on Wednesday, according to media reports.

The most likely flag bearer at the closing ceremony, therefore, is skier Lee Wen-yi (???), the reports said.

After the closing ceremony, the last Taiwanese athletes will return to Taiwan on Feb. 22, the Sports Administration said Thursday.
