In just over one month since its launch, over 10,000 Overseas Compatriot Cards have been issued by the Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC). The official card website has also been visited more than 320,000 times. The OCAC stated that it is expected that 40,000 cards will be issued before the end of next year. The number of around 1000 cooperative stores is still increasing.
The OCAC pointed out that the around 6000 compatriots who returned during the National Day period made up the largest group of applicants, followed by more than 5000 overseas compatriot students in Taiwan; the rest were individuals and members of visiting compatriot groups. A steady stream of compatriots visit the Overseas Compatriot Card application counter every day.
The OCAC mentioned that the cooperative stores are spread across north, central, south and east Taiwan and on outlying islands. In the future, as well as increasing the number of food service business and raising the proportion of stores in east Taiwan and on outlying islands, the OCAC will combine with distinctive local industries and cooperate with chain store operations to allow card holders to enjoy quality food, clothing, accommodation, entertainment and health care services with Taiwanese character. More quality stores and hospitals are invited to join the Overseas Compatriot Card cooperative store list.
The cards are only issued in Taiwan to encourage overseas compatriots to spend money in Taiwan. Overseas compatriots are invited to bring the original copy of permission for permanent residence or passport from their county of residence between 9am and 5pm to the Card Application Counter, 3F, No. 5, Xuzhou Road, Taipei City. The card will be issued on the spot after review.
