Taipei--Local police have arrested a suspect and seized 48 kilograms of amphetamines and 296 kg of semi-finished products following a raid of an underground drug factory in Kanding Township in Pingtung County, law enforcement authorities announced Friday.
The finished and unfinished drugs were estimated to have a market value of over NT$100 million (US$3.29 million), said police officers at Donggang Precinct in the southern Taiwan county.
According to police, the suspect, identified only by his surname Huang (?), has no criminal record, and they only learned that he might be producing drugs at a remote pig farm in Kanding based on a tip received a few months ago.
After tracking him and monitoring his daily activities since then, they decided to launch the raid on Wednesday and managed to arrest him Thursday morning, police said.
In addition to the drugs, police also seized raw materials and equipment used to produce amphetamines during the raid.
Efforts are now being made to track Huang's raw material sources and downstream markets, the police said.
