Taipei, The Maritime Port Bureau (MPB) took action Sunday to help bring back to Taiwan proper hundreds of travelers stranded in the outlying county of Kinmen due to thick fog.
Local media reported that more than 2,000 travelers were stranded in Kinmen over the past 24 hours, when at least 18 flights were canceled due to the fog.
With forecasters predicting that the foggy weather will persist over the coming days, the bureau on Sunday afternoon deployed a ferry from Taichung Port to Kinmen to transport about 250 passengers who were willing to travel back to Taiwan by sea, according to the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC).
The ferry would arrive in Kinmen at 11 p.m. Sunday and will return to Taichung Port the following morning, the MOTC said.
The MPB has also coordinated with bus companies to take passengers from Taichung Port to train stations, bus terminals and airports in the city in an effort to help them reach their destinations as soon as possible.
The MPB advised other travelers wanting to use the ferry service to make reservations at the ticketing counter at the Kinmen airport.
