President Tsai praises Ukraine for defending democracy, freedom

President Tsai Ing-wen (???) on Friday praised the gallant people of Ukraine for standing up to the Russian invasion and defending their country's freedom and democracy.

"Today marks one year of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. In defending their country, the Ukrainian people have inspired the world with incredible bravery & determination," Tsai tweeted.

Taiwan is proud to stand with Ukraine and the country will continue to support its partners in democracy and freedom, she said.

Also on her Facebook page, the president described how the Ukrainian people have resisted Russian aggression with unshakable will, while defending and working hard to recover every inch of Ukrainian territory.

Not only are soldiers fighting on the front lines, there are civilians who work as barbers during the day and change into their uniforms to stand guard at night, Tsai said.

The Ukrainian people, she said, continue to defend their country in their own way and never give up.

In supporting Ukraine, President Tsai said Taiwan has so far donated 27 metric tons of medical supplies, more than 700 metric tons of humanitarian goods and over US$41 million to help Ukrainian refugees displaced by the war.

Taiwan will continue to firmly support Ukraine, she said, believing that when supporters of democracy unite, democracy and freedom will eventually triumph.
