Presidential Office Bureau Chief Appointed as Taiwan’s New Envoy to South Korea

Taipei: George Chiou, one of the bureau chiefs at the Presidential Office, has been named Taiwan's new representative to South Korea, according to a presidential order released on Tuesday. Chiou will assume the role of head of the Taipei Mission in Korea, Taiwan's de facto embassy in the country, succeeding Liang Kuang-chung.

According to Focus Taiwan, Chiou currently serves as the director of the Third Bureau at the Presidential Office. He holds a master's degree in diplomacy from National Chengchi University in Taipei and has notable experience as Taiwan's ambassador to the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis from 2015 to 2018. The Presidential Order has not specified the date when Chiou will begin his tenure in Seoul.

Liang Kuang-chung has been Taiwan's top envoy to South Korea since July 2022. Before his appointment in Seoul, Liang led the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' legal department and held diplomatic roles in Boston, Vietnam, and Bahrain. Following his departure from Seoul, Liang is expected to return to Taipei to take up a position at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' headquarters, as reported by an unnamed source.
