Prosecutors have indicted 14 incumbent lawmakers over alleged election law violations related to the April 10 general elections, officials said Friday.
The Supreme Prosecutors Office said 1,019 people were indicted over election law violations as of Thursday, the expiration date for the 6-month statute of limitations.
Among those elected in April’s elections, 152 people were booked and 14 of them were ultimately indicted, with 10 affiliated with the main opposition Democratic Party (DP) and four with the ruling People Power Party (PPP).
Rep. Jang Dong-hyuk and Rep. Kang Myoung-gu, both affiliated with the PPP, were indicted for underreporting some 30 million won (US$22,249) in assets and electioneering using unlawful methods, respectively. Their indictment had not previously been known.
Prosecutors are continuing investigations of four lawmakers — Reps. Shin Sung-bum and Kim Hyung-dong of the PPP and Reps. Song Ok-joo and Shin Yeong-dae of the DP — as their statute of limitation was suspended after the
ir alleged accomplices were indicted.
The number of indicted lawmaker has nearly halved from that in the 2020 parliamentary elections, when 27 incumbents were indicted.
