Renaissance art to be exhibited digitally in Taiwan next year

A digital exhibition of paintings by 24 famous Renaissance artists will be held in Taiwan in 2022, after a postponement of almost a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the organizers said Monday.

The 200-plus digital artworks, on loan from 36 museums and art galleries worldwide, will be displayed in Taipei in January and in Kaohsiung in June, according to the Taiwan-based Firenze Cultural Exchange International Co.

The exhibition, organized jointly by representatives from Taiwan, the United States and Italy, will feature the famous fresco in the dome of the Florence Cathedral, “The Last Judgement,” by Italian Renaissance artists Giorgio Vasari and Federico Zuccari.

The loan of the 16th century fresco from the Italian city of Florence was achieved as a result of an unprecedented undertaking by the cathedral and Firenze Cultural Exchange, the organizers said.

The fresco will offer a glimpse into the magnificence of the cathedral dome, via digital multi-media displays, according to Firenze Cultural Exchange.

The digital exhibition of artwork from the Renaissance era — a period in European history that covered the 15th and 16th centuries — was originally scheduled to be held in Taipei and Kaohsiung in summer this year but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

It will now be held Jan. 22-May 2, 2022 at the Taipei International Flora Expo’s Pavilion of New Fashion and from June 3 to Sept. 11, 2022 at the National Science and Technology Museum in Kaohsiung, according to Firenze Cultural Exchange.
