Sea warning likely for Tropical Storm Kompasu Sunday evening

A sea warning for Tropical Storm Kompasu will likely be issued as early as Sunday evening as it continues to head for the Bashi Channel between Taiwan and the Philippines, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said Saturday.

As of 2 p.m. Saturday, Kompasu was located 1,371 kilometers southeast of Eluanbi, the southernmost point of Taiwan, moving northward at a speed of 32 kilometers per hour, the CWB said.

It was carrying maximum sustained winds of 72 kph, with gusts of up to 100 kph, according to the weather bureau.

Based on the tropical storm’s current path, CWB forecaster Chen I-hsiu (???) said a sea warning will likely be issued some time between Sunday evening and Monday morning.

A land warning is unlikely to be issued for Taiwan, unless Kompasu drastically changes its course by moving more northward toward Taiwan, Chen said.

The daytime weather throughout most of Taiwan will remain stable on Sunday, but will turn cloudy in the afternoon due to an arriving northeasterly wind system, she said, indicating that rain will be more apparent in the evening.

The wet weather forecast for the north and east of the island, including the Hengchun Peninsula, is expected to last until Oct. 13, Chen said.

Kompasu is forecast to come closest to Taiwan Monday to Tuesday, she added.
