Busan: South Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced it will initiate an investigation concerning a China Airlines (CAL) flight that deviated from air traffic control directions and landed on the incorrect runway at Busan’s Gimhae International Airport. The incident is being classified as a “quasi accident.”
According to Focus Taiwan, although the incident involving flight CI186 from Taoyuan on Thursday resulted in no damage or injuries, it qualifies as a serious incident under aviation safety regulations. The Korea Aviation and Railway Accident Investigation Board is set to conduct a probe into the matter.
The situation gained public attention when Taiwanese aerospace YouTuber and former pilot James Wango disclosed during a livestream that the CAL aircraft had made an incorrect runway landing. Taiwan’s Transportation Safety Board expressed willingness to support the Korean investigation if requested and is prepared to assume responsibility should the Korean authorities decide against pursuing their own inquiry.
CAL has verified the error, acknowledging that the flight did not adhere to air traffic control instructions upon its arrival in Busan. The airline has initiated an internal investigation into the incident. In response to South Korea’s investigation, the company stated that there are no further updates at this time.
