Spanish Lawmakers Aim to Bolster Ties With Taiwan, Learn From Its High-Tech Expertise

Taipei: A group of visiting Spanish lawmakers on Wednesday called for the promotion of closer bilateral relations with Taiwan, during a meeting with Deputy Foreign Minister François Wu according to the foreign ministry.According to Focus Taiwan, the six-member cross-party delegation, led by Mikel Legarda Uriarte, is visiting Taiwan from Tuesday through Saturday, as announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) in a press release. During a luncheon in Taipei hosted by Wu, Legarda, a member of the Congress of Deputies, praised Taiwan's democracy.The Spanish parliamentarian emphasized his country's interest in learning from Taiwan, particularly its ability to leverage high-tech advancements to navigate geopolitical challenges and protect its democratic institutions from authoritarian influences. The five-day visit aims to facilitate closer bilateral exchanges across various sectors, Legarda stated.Wu highlighted the shared democratic values between Taiwan and Spain, noting recent growth in bilateral trade. He expressed hopes for further collaboration in semiconductors, renewable energy, and information and communication technology, according to MOFA.The delegation, which includes lawmakers Cristina Valido García, Nerea Ahedo Ceza, and Idoia Sagastizabal, marks the second group from Spain to visit Taiwan since January 2023. While in Taiwan, the delegation is scheduled to meet with Deputy Legislative Speaker Johnny Chiang and National Security Council Deputy Secretary-General Lin Fei-fan, as stated by MOFA.Additionally, the visiting lawmakers will tour the International Trade Administration, the National Science and Technology Council, and the Hsinchu Science Park, to explore Taiwan's technological and scientific advancements.
