The Embassy of Saint Lucia in Taiwan hosted a ceremony Monday at which several organizations signed an agreement to cooperate on tackling climate change and atmospheric observation in the face of serious global climate challenges.
Among the groups signing the memorandum of understanding (MOU) on a climate change cooperation platform were Chinese Culture University (CCU), the Taiwan Center for Security Studies, the Taiwan Climate Services Partnership, International CSR Association, International Climate Development Institute, and the International Development Empowerment and Representation Agency, a St. Lucian think tank.
The goal of the MOU is to spur close cooperation on climate change, atmospheric observation, and technology development and promote academic exchanges and communication on related issues.
Saint Lucia Ambassador Edwin Laurent said Taiwan and Saint Lucia are island countries similar to more than 40 countries that make up the Alliance of Small Island States, and they will be the countries that will be the most quickly and severely affected by climate change.
Taiwan’s scientific research can help the international community face these challenges, and it is hoped that the new platform can be used to promote cooperation in this area, Laurent said.
CCU President Wang Shu-yin (???) said her university has many specialized departments, such as the Department of Atmospheric Sciences, which can assist Taiwan’s international friends with climate observation techniques.
The Department of Mass Communication can raise climate change awareness among people in Taiwan and help allies promote related issues, while the Graduate Institute of Biotechnology can help other countries solve agricultural problems, Wang said.
