Taipei, With northeasterly winds intensifying, the weather in Taiwan will be sunny or cloudy on Sunday, with windward northern and eastern Taiwan expected to experience brief showers, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).
Daytime high temperatures on Sunday are forecast to hit 19-23 degrees Celsius in northern, northeastern and eastern Taiwan, and 25-30 degrees in central, southern and southeastern Taiwan.
However, the mercury will likely dwindle to 15-16 degrees between Sunday night and early Monday morning, the CWB said.
With increased moisture in the air accompanied by northeasterly winds and a cloud system from southern China moving eastward, there is a chance of intermittent rainfall in other areas of the island between Sunday afternoon and night, aside from northern and northeastern Taiwan.
In addition, strong winds and big waves are forecast in the areas north of Tainan, in eastern Taiwan's Taitung, Green Island and Orchid Island, as well as the Hengchun Peninsula in the south and the outlying Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu islands, according to the CWB.
Meanwhile, the air quality in most areas of Taiwan and Kinmen and Penghu islands was "moderate" at noon on Sunday, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) flashing a "yellow light" in most parts across the country, according to the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA).
However, the AQI was flashing an "orange alert" in some parts of Nantou, Yunlin, Chiayi, Tainan, Kaohsiung, Pingtung, Kinmen and Penghu counties, indicating unhealthy levels of pollutants for sensitive groups, and a "red alert" in Zhushan in Nantou, meaning the air was unhealthy for the general public, the EPA said.
