Taipei-A strong continental cold air mass sent temperatures plunging to 11 degrees Celsius in Taoyuan's Xinwu District early Sunday, the lowest temperature recorded in a flatland area of Taiwan so far this winter, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).
However, as the cold air mass weakens, sunny to cloudy skies are forecast for areas around Taiwan Sunday, with daytime highs to reach 20-22 degrees in northern Taiwan and Yilan in the northeast, 24 degrees in central Taiwan and Hualien in the east, and 26-27 degrees in southern Taiwan and Taitung in the southeast, CWB forecaster Liu Yu-chi (???) said.
On Monday, temperatures in the north are forecast to drop slightly as northeasterly winds strengthen. Highs in the north will fall to 18 degrees, while the mercury in central and southern Taiwan will be unaffected, with highs remaining above 24 degrees, according to Liu.
Rain is forecast for northern Taiwan starting Tuesday with moisture in the air increasing, he said, adding that another cold wave is expected to arrive at the weekend.
