Taichung Biodegradable Mulch Film Wins iF Product Design Award

Taichung: Taichung's Tune and Turn Design and Strategy (Tunenturn LTD.) has clinched a 2025 iF Product Design Award for their innovative biodegradable mulching film made from pineapple farming waste.

According to Focus Taiwan, the mulching film, commissioned by Taichung fiber company Eason, embodies the cradle-to-cradle (C2C) concept, which aligns with the design firm's mission to promote sustainability. The film, recognized in the Service category by Germany's iF International Forum Design, boasts a variety of applications, including crop-covering tarps and bags, as noted on the company's website.

Taiwan celebrated this year by winning with 369 products across seven disciplines and 49 subcategories. Notably, Taiwan's TPV Technology Group secured the country's only gold award for its electronic paper vision tester. Tune and Turn Design and Strategy, founded by the married couple Chu Yang-chan and Hsu Wei-ting, aims to minimize environmental impact by creating biodegradable plant fiber products, thereby reducing carbon footprints.

The company's eco-friendly initiatives span across social impact, service designs, beauty packaging, and children's products. Chu emphasized that while the cost of organic plant-based raw materials is higher, the environmental benefits justify the expense. Beyond utilizing plant fibers from waste materials like pineapples, corn cobs, and coconut shells, Tunenturn also crafts products from bamboo waste, including mugs and dental floss.
