Taipei, The Taichung City Police Department's 5th Precinct busted a marijuana growing and selling operation on Tuesday that involved the popular cryptocurrency Bitcoin and drugs being sold at NT$420,000 (US$14,348) per kilogram.
According to a statement issued by the precinct Wednesday, it received information that a man, identified only by his surname Lin (?), was growing the level-2 drug at his townhouse in the East District of Taichung, central Taiwan.
Once the information was confirmed and an arrest warrant secured, the police arrested Lin on Tuesday and then raided his residence.
Inside the townhouse, they found 16 marijuana buds, a pack of dried marijuana flower product and equipment for growing the plant including a hydroponic system, a hygro thermometer, nutrient solution, LED grow lights, and a ventilation system, which were all seized as evidence.
The police noted that Lin used Bitcoin to purchase the marijuana seeds from a foreign website and conducted online research to put together a marijuana growing operation in his townhouse. He then packaged the drugs and sold them for NT$420,000 a kilogram.
Lin had made one sale since starting the operation and was preparing to sell a second batch when he was arrested.
Taichung District Prosecutors Office is now investigating Lin for violating the Narcotics Hazard Prevention Act.
