Tainan: A 76-year-old woman who caused a fatal car crash in Tainan on Sunday has been released on bail on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter, the city's prosecutors office said Monday.
According to Focus Taiwan, Tainan District Prosecutors Office spokesperson Tsai Tsung-sheng stated that an autopsy would be conducted later on the cyclist who was killed in the crash. The driver, surnamed Liu, was released on NT$100,000 (US$3,338) bail following questioning.
The accident occurred around 1 p.m. on Dasyue Road near Shengli Road in Tainan's East District. Liu reportedly struck two cars waiting at a red light, hit a cyclist, and then continued into the opposite lane, colliding with another car and damaging a row of parked scooters, affecting a total of 29 vehicles.
The Tainan City Fire Bureau received the accident report at 1:46 p.m. Responders found the male cyclist in cardiac arrest; he was transported to a hospital but could not be revived. Additionally, a male and a female scooter rider were hospitalized for their injuries.
Yen Jia-liang, deputy director of the Tainan City Police Department's First Precinct, mentioned that a breathalyzer test showed no signs of alcohol. A preliminary investigation indicates the crash might have resulted from negligence. Tainan police are also considering whether Liu may have accidentally pressed the accelerator instead of the brakes when approaching the red light.
