Taipei to open quarantine center for quarantine breakers

Taipei,  Taipei will open a quarantine center aimed at housing individuals who break home-quarantine rules, Deputy Mayor Huang Shan-shan (黃珊珊) said Friday.

The 40-bed facility, established by the Taipei City Hospital, will open April 3 to accommodate home-quarantined people who intentionally violate the rules, Huang announced.

Despite repeated government appeals and a maximum fine of NT$1 million (US$33,000), several violations of home quarantines, under which people cannot leave their homes, have been reported.

Eight or nine cases are being investigated, and those found to have breached the regulations risk being placed in the quarantine center and having their name revealed, she said.

Taipei and neighboring New Taipei have the highest number of people under home quarantine, hitting around 8,800 and nearly 10,000, respectively, according to Central Epidemic Commander Center figures.
