Taipei:Taiwan welcomes efforts by the United States and China to mitigate the risk of war through dialogue, but emphasizes the importance of respecting World War II's historical record and acknowledging the Taiwanese people's right to exist, President Lai Ching-te stated during his National Day address.
According to Focus Taiwan, President Lai addressed the ongoing "gray zone" pressure from China, highlighting Taiwan's increased defense spending and efforts to enhance its overall defense capabilities by integrating government and civilian resources. He clarified that these measures are not provocations but are intended to ensure that dialogue occurs on the basis of "dignity and parity."
President Lai expressed support for the United States and China managing their competition through dialogue to reduce conflict and war risks. However, he insisted that achieving regional security, peace, and stability demands an accurate understanding of historical events. He stressed the necessity of respecting Taiwan's existence and warned against distorting WWII history.
The ROC government relocated to Taiwan from mainland China in 1949 following its defeat in the Chinese Civil War by Communist forces, who then established the People's Republic of China.
In his address, Lai also highlighted Taiwan's diplomatic strides, including his May visit to Eswatini and Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim's June visit to Palau. He noted China's attempts to obstruct these diplomatic efforts by pressuring African states to deny airspace access.
Lai underscored Taiwan's collaboration with international partners across various sectors, including health care, agriculture, energy, technology, education, and sustainable development. He emphasized that "Taiwan Can Help" is not merely a slogan but a commitment to sharing capabilities and responsibilities.
Taiwan continues to seek international recognition amid ongoing efforts by Beijing to isolate it, as China asserts its claim over Taiwan as part of its territory, with unification by force as a possible objective.
