Taipei: Taiwan and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) marked the 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations at a reception in Taipei on Wednesday, where leaders of the two countries pledged to deepen cooperation in the years ahead.

According to Focus Taiwan, Vincentian Prime Minister Godwin Friday expressed in his address at the reception that the relationship between the two nations has strengthened significantly over the past 45 years. "It has evolved from one of the formality of establishing diplomatic relations to engaging in technical missions, to fostering stronger economic ties that involve the private and public sectors, and to massively expanding educational opportunities," Friday stated, highlighting the growth and evolution of their bilateral relations.

He further expressed his vision for the future, hoping that by the 50th anniversary, the relationship between the two countries would have grown even more. Friday emphasized the importance of joint business ventures between Vincentian and Taiwanese enterprises, noting that such collaborations would create opportunities and enrich both nations.

Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te welcomed Prime Minister Friday and his delegation to Taiwan, marking Friday's first visit to Taiwan since assuming office late last year. Lai described the visit as a testament to the strong friendship between Taiwan and SVG and an opportunity to celebrate an important historical milestone.

Emphasizing the enduring support and mutual trust between the two nations, Lai remarked, "The world has faced many new challenges over the past 45 years, but no matter how things change, our nations have always supported one another and walked shoulder to shoulder." He also addressed Vincentian students attending the reception, encouraging them to engage in the diplomatic relationship and contribute new energy to bilateral collaboration.

Located in the Caribbean, SVG is among the 12 countries maintaining diplomatic relations with the Republic of China, Taiwan's official name. The diplomatic ties between the two nations were established on August 15, 1981.

Prime Minister Friday and his delegation, who arrived in Taiwan early Tuesday, are on a visit concluding on Saturday. During their stay, Friday is expected to participate in an investor roundtable and meet with Vincentians residing in Taiwan, fostering further engagement and collaboration between the two countries.
