Taiwan Badminton pair fail to reach World Championship quarterfinals

Taiwan’s Olympic gold medalists Lee Yang (??) and Wang Chi-lin (???) failed to reach the BWF World Championships men’s doubles quarterfinals on Thursday after losing to Choi Sol Gyu and Seo Seung Jae of South Korea in the round of 16.

The game between the Taiwan duo World No. 4 and tournament fourth seeds and the 10th-seeded South Korea pairing went back-and-forth before the South Koreans pulled away in the third game to win two games to one, 21-17, 16-21, 21-14.

Thursday’s match was the sixth meeting of the two pairings, with Choi and Seo leading the head-to-head 3-2.

In their last match at the Super 500 Thailand Open in May, it took a hard fought three games before the Taiwan duo won.

In Thursday’s game, the South Koreans started well and took the first game 21-17, before Lee and Wang staged a come back in the second game. With the match finely balanced at 16-16, the Taiwan shuttlers won five back-to-back points to level at one game each.

However, with Choi and Seo leading in the third game at 16-14, it was the turn of the Korea pairing to find something extra as they won the next five points to secure victory.

The South Koreans received a bye in the round of 64 to enter the round of 32, where they were scheduled to face the winners of a round of 64 match between British duo Steven Stallwood and Callum Hemming and Mauritian pairing Georges Paul and Aatish Lubah. However, both teams pulled out of the competition sending the South Korean duo into the round of 16 against Lee and Wang having played no games before the match.

The BWF World Championships 2022 is being held from Aug. 22-28 at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium.
