Taiwan won two golds and one silver medal at the 2022 NH Nonghyup Bank Incheon Korea Cup International Soft Tennis Tournament, which concludes in South Korea this week.

The tournament, which is being held from Sept. 14-21 in Incheon, saw Taiwan’s mixed doubles pairing Cheng Chu-ling (鄭竹玲) and Yu Kai-wen (余凱文), and the women’s team clinch gold, while Cheng and Kuo Chien-chi (郭千綺) won a silver in the women’s doubles.

The gold won in the women’s team event was a highlight for Taiwan as they beat hosts South Korea.

It was the third time the women’s team has won gold at an international event after winning an Asian tournament in 1988 and a world tournament in 1999.

The mixed doubles duo are familiar to Taiwanese soft tennis fans as Yu and Cheng previously won gold at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia, defeating South Korea 4-3 in the final.

Cheng also claimed a silver in the women’s singles at the Asian Games that year, and two bronzes — in the women’s doubles and women’s team events — at the Asian Games in 2014 In Incheon.

Soft tennis originated in Japan in 1884, and uses soft rubber balls instead of the harder balls used in regular tennis. The sport is played primarily in Asia, especially in Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, India, Thailand and the Philippines.
