Taiwan doubles teams finish in second place at WTT Star Contender Doha

Taiwanese players had a packed day at the World Table Tennis (WTT) Star Contender Doha tournament in Qatar Wednesday, securing second-place finishes in both the men’s and women’s doubles.

In the men’s doubles, Lin Yun-ju (???) and Liao Cheng-ting (???) bowed out in the final against Benedikt Duda and Qiu Dang (??) of Germany, losing 11-7, 6-11, 11-6, 3-11, 11-4 Wednesday afternoon, local time.

Yun and Liao had dispatched Cho Dae-seong and An Jae-hyun of South Korea in their semifinal match 11-9, 11-4, 11-7 earlier in the day.

Between the two doubles matches, Lin also played in the men’s singles quarterfinals against Lim Jong-hoon, losing to the South Korean 9-11, 11-9, 11-5, 11-7.

In the women’s doubles, Cheng I-ching (???) and Li Yu-jhun (???) reached the final, where they lost to Miyuu Kihara and Miyu Nagasaki of Japan 13-11, 11-5, 11-6.

Fellow Taiwanese pairing Huang Yi-hua (???) and Chen Szu-yu (???) also reached the tournament’s semifinals, finishing in joint third place after losing 11-3, 11-8, 11-8 to the eventual winners Kihara and Nagasaki.

After her doubles semifinal defeat, Chen went on to play in the women’s singles quarterfinals against Zhang Rui (??) of China, winning the match 9-11, 11-4, 11-4, 11-4.

She is set to meet Japan’s Kihara again in the women’s singles semifinals Thursday.

Cheng and Lin, the World No.1 mixed doubles duo, are scheduled to meet Bernadette Szocs and Ovidiu Ionescu of Romania in a semifinal match scheduled on Wednesday evening, local time.
