Taiwan Duo Clinches Taipei Open Women’s Doubles Title After 17-Year Hiatus

Taipei: Taiwanese badminton players Hsieh Pei-shan and Hung En-tzu triumphed in the women's doubles category at the Taipei Open, marking the first victory for a local women's team in this event in 17 years.

According to Focus Taiwan, Hsieh and Hung, who entered the tournament as the top seeds, defeated Japan's Mizuki Otake and Miyu Takahashi in the finals with scores of 21-14, 21-15. The match lasted 43 minutes, securing their place in history as the first Taiwanese winners of the women's doubles title since Chien Yu-chin and Cheng Wen-hsing in 2008.

The Taipei Open, part of the HSBC BWF World Tour, is a Super 300 tournament with a total prize pool of US$240,000. Hsieh and Hung, who began their partnership in June of the previous year, both attended Kaohsiung Municipal Kaohsiung Girls' Senior High School, where they were coached by Chien.

Hung expressed the significance of the win, noting the challenges they faced as a new team. Despite initial disagreements, they worked through the difficulties to achieve their first title together. Hung, who has also competed in singles since recovering from an injury in 2023, believes this dual experience will enhance their future performances.

Hsieh shared her excitement over the win, noting their progression from frequent semifinal and quarterfinal finishes to a championship victory on home soil. The duo, currently ranked 13th in the world for women's doubles, aims to break into the top 10 by the end of the year.
