Taiwan Envoy Meets Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Prime Minister, Conveys President Lai’s Congratulations

Taipei: Taiwan's ambassador to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines recently met with the newly elected Prime Minister Godwin Friday. The meeting was to convey congratulations from President Lai Ching-te, as announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) on Sunday.

According to Focus Taiwan, Ambassador Fiona Fan delivered President Lai's message during her meeting with the prime minister. In response, the prime minister expressed his gratitude and asked the ambassador to relay his thanks to President Lai. The Ministry did not disclose the specific date of the meeting or provide additional details.

The statement from MOFA was released following a query by CNA regarding the future outlook of Taiwan-SVG relations. It is noteworthy that the New Democratic Party (NDP), led by Friday, has previously proposed the idea of switching diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to Beijing. However, this issue was not addressed by the new prime minister during his election campaign.

Godwin Friday was sworn in as the prime minister after his party, the NDP, won 14 out of 15 parliamentary seats in the recent general elections, ending the 24-year tenure of Unity Labour Party leader Ralph Gonsalves. During his swearing-in ceremony, Prime Minister Friday described the election outcome as a clear mandate for "major, transformational changes" and committed to working diligently to fulfill campaign promises, as reported by Dominica News Online.

Taiwan, officially known as the Republic of China (ROC), has maintained diplomatic relations with Saint Vincent and the Grenadines since 1981.
