Taiwan expresses condolences on death of former Philippine president

Taiwan offered condolences Sunday on the passing of former Philippine President Fidel V. Ramos, who died Sunday at the age of 94, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said.

The former president reportedly died of COVID-19 complications.

Ramos, who served as president between 1992 and 1998, revitalized the Philippine economy and worked to achieve stability and advance democracy in the country, MOFA said in a statement.

The late president had lived in Taiwan for some time during his youth and had close ties to Taiwan, as his father had served as the Philippines Ambassador to the Republic of China, according to MOFA.

Ramos paid several visits to Taiwan after his presidency, the most recent being in 2017, and he contributed to exchanges between the two countries, MOFA said.

Taiwan offers its condolences to the government and people of the Philippines on Ramos' passing, MOFA said.
