Taiwan issues land warning for severe Typhoon Lekima

Taipei, The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) on Thursday issued a land warning for severe Typhoon Lekima, advising residents in Taipei, New Taipei, Keelung, Hualien and Yilan to prepare for strong winds and heavy rain.

Ships operating in waters north and east of Taiwan should also be on alert for high waves, the bureau said.

As of 8 a.m. Thursday, Lekima was located about 520 kilometers eastsoutheast of Taipei, moving at a speed of 15kph in a northnorthwesterly direction, according to bureau data.

It had strengthened into a severe typhoon, packing maximum sustained winds of 184 kph, with gusts of up to 227 kph, the bureau said.

The peripheral of Lekima, which has a radius of 250 km, is likely to bring heavy or extremely heavy rain to parts of New Taipei and Yilan as well as the mountainous areas in Taoyuan and Hsinchu on Thursday, the CWB said.

Heavy rain is also expected in areas from Miaoli northward and the mountainous areas of Taichung, Nantou, Chiayi and Hualien, it added.

Heavy rain refers to accumulated rainfall of more than 80mm over 24 hours or more than 40mm in one hour, while extremely heavy rainfall is defined as more than 200mm in 24 hours or more than 100mm in three hours, according to the CWB.
